I don't think that the real reason for someone not having children is overpopulation even if they say so. It's probably just an excuse and easy thing to say. The real reason is that having children is not convenient anymore. When you get a child your life automatically becomes 10x harder, especially if you live in the city. People can't live anymore on one paycheck so parents work 8+ hours a day. Kindergartens are expensive and hard to get in a lot of places. Grandparents also either work or are dead. You also have to have a lot more attention on your child because they can easily fall victim to their tablet and phones. In a lot of countries you don't have parental leave which is very important, especially for mothers. Imagine if mothers were allowed to stay at home for 2 years with pay and without the posibility of losing her job. There are SOOOO many problems parents face today that they haven't 20+ years ago. So it's a lot easier to just not have a child. There were always people who decided not to have children just because they didn't want to and that is completely okay. But people today are practically forced to not want children.

Finding a partner and having a healthy relationship is hard for many due to cultural factors resulting in some just giving up and being lonely, and if you can't get the 3 prior having children is incredibly hard of a ask and having them grow up in a productive and stable home is almost impossible.
